Travel Permission
ANYTIME YOU LEAVE CAMPUS, you have to submit a "pass" in Orah.
For seniors, what were called "tips" or "tickets" in LiveSafe and the Student Travel Permission Form submissions are all rolled up under the "Passes" umbrella in Orah.
You should check out Orah's guide to passes linked up above for the general overview but here are some NCSSM-specific details:
When you submit a Missing Curfew, Overnight, or Travel 30+ Miles pass, your legal guardian(s) will receive an email notification to endorse, deny, or request a resubmission of that pass. Student Life staff will no longer call your legal guardian(s) to confirm your requests; we're relying on them to respond to those email notifications. If your legal guardian(s) are the one picking you up, they can ignore the email notification and we will approve the pass at signout.
You will be able to see the status of your scheduled pass in Orah throughout this whole process.
When it is time for you to leave campus, you will still sign out at the CC office with whomever is picking you up. This part is unchanged from our current process. We will check the ID of the person picking you up vs. what your legal guardian(s) have approved on the scheduled pass, and you'll be all good to go!
If your legal guardian(s) have NOT endorsed the scheduled pass by the time you need to check out, this will slow down the signout process for everyone. We will call them to confirm the details of your scheduled pass and then approve it if they give us verbal confirmation.
Using the NFC TILES TO CHECK BACK IN
Posted at most building entrances/lobbies, you will find a small gray and white tile with the Orah logo on it (right). You can use the Orah app on your phone and your phone's NFC scanner to end your signout pass and check back into campus. If you don't use the Orah app when swiping your phone by the tile, you will just be taken to the 'download student app' page.
You cannot end the pass* without swiping your phone by one of these tiles. We currently have one tile posted at the most heavily trafficked parts of our campuses, but we will probably end up having multiple tiles at the busiest parts of campus if we are to roll this out for next year.
*The only pass you can end on your own via the app/desktop version or using an NFC tile is Day/Local. The other passes require a staff member or an NFC tile swipe to end.

CC and Security Office Hours and Numbers
CCs are available 24 hours a day to assist your students. The Bryan CC desk is staffed from 7:30am to 1:30am, Sunday through Thursday and from 7:30am to 2:30am on Friday and Saturday. All other CC building offices are staffed beginning at 6:30pm each day. Outside of these hours there will always be 2 CCs on call while students are on campus. The contact numbers for the on-call CCs are posted at each CC desk and can be viewed here. If your student has an emergency they are encouraged to reach out to the on duty CCs.
Campus Safety and Security Officers are available 24 hours. They can be contacted in non-emergencies at
Non-Emergency: 919.416.2911 (phone)
Emergency: 919.416.2711 (radio)
Please note that because these calls are handled by a radio you should allow a few seconds to pass before speaking after the officer has spoken.
How do I send mail to my student?
Mail and packages should be addressed as follows:
Student’s Full Name
NCSSM
1219 Broad Street Durham, NC 27705-3577
Your student can find their mail box number via blackbaud. Your student should check their mail box often. If they are having any trouble accessing it, they can seek assistance from anyone at the Bryan CC desk. Packages will be kept either in the mail room or be brought to the Bryan CC Desk. Students will be emailed when a package arrives and given instructions of where to collect it from.
