Hello 3 Beall families! I hope you enjoyed the week off together, I am sure all the students appreciated getting to spend some time with family before coming back for exams.
Use the menu below to navigate quickly through the contents of this month's update:
We started and ended November with breaks from school, but is it good to have everyone back on campus, even though its only for a short time! Exams can be stressful for students, so we will make sure to plan some time to relax and talk about maintaining balance and health through our busy season.
In November we had a lot of fun big group activities with other halls both on and off campus. At the beginning of the month we traveled to Southpoint Mall to do some shopping and spent a beautiful afternoon in Duke Gardens having a picnic. After the whether got colders, the students still had a chance to get their energy out playing Laser Tag in the PEC and going to Ice Skating with our sibling halls! We got to celebrate student culture on campus with the Asian Student Association block party and LAF. Many students all over campus, including some of our 3rd Beallians spent a lot of time preparing for Latin America Fest, which many students, families, and community members got to watch in the Auditorium! Please enjoy some photo highlights of our month!
December is a short month, but we pack a lot into it, so make sure to read through the updates. We will get to enjoy our J-Term when we get back.
Throughout January of each year, students take a break from regular coursework during J-Term to engage in employee-led educational opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. Examples of past J-Term experiences include Capes and Culture, Introduction to Aviation, the Science of Breadmaking, Fantastic Fungi, and extended travel to Costa Rica or the American West. J-Term begins on January 7th and ends on January 29th. You can view your student’s assigned J-Term class or classes on Blackbaud.
January Term (J-Term) is an essential part of the NCSSM Academic Program. Since class meeting patterns are different during J-Term, attendance is calculated differently. One unexcused hour of missed class will be recorded as one unexcused absence. J-Term is considered its own term for attendance purposes. The number of accumulated absences reverts to zero at the beginning of spring semester.
Semi-Formal, NCSSM’s annual winter dance, is Saturday, December 6th from 8:30 – 10:55 PM in the PEC Gymnasium. This year’s theme is Third Beall -- (Coral Cove!) All students are invited to take a trip under the sea with us and enjoy the evening with friends and hallmates. There will be festive decorations, music, snacks, and dancing!
Students planning to attend are encouraged to bring semi-formal dress clothes back to campus after the break. Appropriate attire includes a dressy skirt, shirt and tie (jacket optional), dress pants, a dress, and dress shoes.
Families, if you are interested in volunteering at or donating to semi-formal, view the opportunities and sign up here!
Every school year, most halls get a chance to open up to other students once or twice. We call this hall inter-visitation or IVIS/IVIZ. A lot of students really look forward to this because they get to share their hall and room decor with students who normally don't get to see it. Students usually play music, share snacks, host a game night, or even decide to have a study session during the IVIS. I will be on hall the entire time walking around and checking in on students, and I am very excited to see the girls share all of the work the have put into their rooms.
Halls also spend extra time setting up the hall to look extra special for guests, and 3rd Beall is in a special position this year where we get to use some of the very impressive winter formal decor in exchange for some clean up help. If you are going to be visiting for winter formal and want to drop by and leave some sweets to share, please let me know.
If you coming to the school to pick up your student for Winter break, I recommend coming up to hall to see our special decorations before I have to take them all down.
Can you believe that we have reached the halfway point for the year? With winter break beginning Friday, December 12th I wanted to provide a breakdown of how students should prepare for these longer breaks.
Residence Halls close on December 12th at 5:00pm. Halls will reopen on Tuesday, January 6th at noon. Some students may leave earlier than the 12th if they are done with exams.
Because this is a very long break we require that students unplug all items in their room, including fridges and fish tanks. During room inspections this week I will check that students have properly defrosted their fridges, so that we can avoid any puddles or mold growth over the break.
Students should also make sure to take home any open food packages due to the long break.
I will also ask students to wipe down desks and make sure that their floors are clean; I would hate for us to come back to bugs on hall in January.
Signing out for this break is handled similarly to an extended weekend.
Students will submit an Overnight pass on Orah before or during our hall meeting right before Winter Break. On this Orah pass, they indicate where they are going for the break, who they are traveling with, and how they are getting to their destination. If students have specific questions about checkout procedures for Winter Break, they should speak to me. This is similar to our last extended weekend.
